Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/05/2011 02:07 PM
Calaveras County, CA....The 2011 Calaveras County Academic Decathlon is coming up on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Bret Harte High School from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Grades 9-12 are welcome. The Academic Decathlon, the premiere national scholastic competition for high school students, was created to provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual academic competition. Each student competes in ten events which are Economics, Essay, Art, Interview, Language and Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech. Each year the Science or Social Science topic is used as the Super Quiz topic. The competition format of the Super Quiz differs from that of the other subject areas. While students take one written test in each of the other six subjects, they will take two tests in the Super Quiz subject: one written and the other oral. The oral relay portion of the Super Quiz is the only part of the actual testing that is open to the public, and it is inevitably one of the most memorable and exciting parts of the Academic Decathlon competition.....

San Andreas, CA...Some of our local school children and churches are really going all out to help our local charitable organizations fulfill their mission during these tough economic times. Members of the Christian Family Learning Center Student Council spent part of their Friday filling food bags and seeing how our local Resource Connection Food Bank functions. They also brought with them thousands of paper grocery bags and egg cartons that they can use. Food Bank Director said that each bag they have to purchase is a significant cost to them so if you can save your paper grocery bags it really helps them stretch their food dollars.
