New Melones, CA....There is a strange glow coming into my window today. It is the sun! I had almost forgot what it looked like. Today is beautiful, and the rest of the week is predicted to be sunny and rain-free. Hurray! I plan on spending as much time as possible outside this week. I've got a bad case of cabin fever-how about you?.....

Calaveras County Fairgrounds, Angels Camp, CA....Calaveras County has a long history bound to rock and soil. It seems that history is alive and so is the mineral richness that is our region. The Calaveras Gem and Mineral Society hosts regular meetings the third Sunday of every month: This month is different however, as today started the annual two day Gem and Mineral Show at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds.....

Angels Camp, CA.....We had rain today but you did not hear thunder. It was shotguns that brought the booms all day today as Team Angels (sponsored by the Angels Gun Club) hosted tournament trap shooting competition for youth today on Gun Club Road. Within the last two to three years, young peoples' interest in competitive shooting sports has grown so large that today's league competition had to be split between multiple venues.....

The City of Angels is accepting applications for 2 seats on the Planning Commission. One seat fills a current vacancy which expires June 30, 2012. The applicant appointed will take their seat at the next monthly Planning Commission meeting following the appointment. The second seat is a three-year term beginning July 1, 2011 and ending June 30, 2014. Stipend $50/meeting. Residents of Angels Camp wishing to apply may pick up an overview of the position and an Appointment Form at City Hall, 584 S. Main in Angels Camp, online at www.angelscamp.gov or contact marykelly@angelscamp.gov Completed applications should be returned to Mary Kelly at City Hall by Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Interviews are tentatively scheduled at the May 3, 2011 City Council Meeting. For additional information call 736-2181.

The Junior Miss Calaveras Pageant and Junior Frog Jump will be held concurrently on Saturday, May 14 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Altaville Melones Fire Department in Angels Camp. The Junior Miss Calaveras competition is open to 8th grade girls in Calaveras County. The contestants are judged on beauty, personality and pleasantness by a panel of experienced judges and raffle ticket sales. The winner will be announced during the Junior Frog jump and she will be presented at the Calaveras County Fair the next week. All interested 8th grade girls are encouraged to apply.....

Copperopolis, CA...In response to the new administration’s renewed focus on community oriented policing, which focuses on the formation of problem solving partnerships between the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and business entities and citizens within the county, Sheriff Gary Kuntz took the first step in realizing this goal by selecting and appointing the first resident deputy for the renewed Resident Deputy Program. Effective March 7, 2011 Deputy Wayne Newnam, a 13 year veteran of the sheriff’s department, was selected and will assume his new role as the resident deputy for B-Beat, which includes the townships of Copperopolis, Vallecito, Douglas Flat, Carson Hill, portions of Murphys, and the unincorporated areas of Angels Camp....
