Arnold, CA.....The Friends of the Arnold Library are holding a Book Sale on Memorial Day Weekend, May 28th~29th. They will also be holding a raffle at 4:00pm on Sunday May 29th, winners need not be present. Tickets are $1 or 6 for $5 and will be on sale both Saturday and Sunday. Dick Watson has asked GABA members to please donate prizes for the raffle…anything would be greatly appreciated. You can drop off your donation at the Library at 1065 Blagen Road. HOSPITAL HOSTS DRIVE TO HELP NEEDY ANIMALS |

The Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Employee Satisfaction Team is at it again! They have initiated a drive to help the many animals whose owners have been affected by the downturn in the economy. Effective immediately, anyone can drop off pet food, cat litter, animal treats, collars, leashes, and cat carriers at the hospital or the Family Medical Centers in Arnold, Angels Camp, Copperopolis, San Andreas and Valley Springs by June 30th. The desperately needed items will be forwarded to The Resource Connection, Animal Control and the Calaveras Humane Society. The hospital hopes to “Stuff another van” with the donations. ....

Despite this gray drizzle, summer is coming. I can almost taste it. The cherries and apricots may be few and far between because of the late snows this year, but I will savor each morsel. I am longing for the lush leaves of sweet basil, the juicy peaches, ripe tomatoes with a dash of sea salt, the sight and smell of my Dad canning his spicy, garlicky peppers, and crisp lemon cucumbers from my Mom's garden tossed in vinegar. These are the things I love about summer. This week, I am bridging the gap between the tender days of spring, and the full days of summer with a vegetable dish which includes some of the best of each season. .....
