Support for increasing the level of legal immigration has risen, while the share saying legal immigration should decrease has fallen. The survey by Pew Research Center, conducted June 5-12 among 2,002 adults, finds that 38% say legal immigration into the United States should be kept at its present level, while 32% say it should be increased and 24% say it should be decreased.

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/28/2018 12:36 AM
Washington, DC...Today, we thank Justice Anthony M. Kennedy for his thirty years of distinguished service on the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1987, President Reagan nominated him to the Court, and he was swiftly confirmed without opposition. A Californian—like the President who appointed him—Justice Kennedy is a true man of letters. During his tenure on the Court, he authored landmark opinions in every significant area of constitutional law, most notably on equal protection under the law, the separation of powers, and the First Amendment’s guarantees of freedom of speech and religion.

The 2017-2018 Civil Grand Jury Final Report

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/28/2018 08:57 PM
San Andreas, CA...Dear Judge Healy, The 2017-2018 Civil Grand Jury respectfully submits its final report in accordance with Penal Code 933(a) to the Calaveras County Superior Court. This year’s Grand Jury was composed of 19 dedicated citizens of Calaveras County who were determined and willing to work extra-long hours making recommendations for improvements to local government. It has been an unforgettable experience to work alongside these individuals who chose to prioritize tasks and duties in order to perform their jurisdictional rights to investigate any local government agencies. They also went far beyond my expectations in taking initiative to attend report writing workshops in Sacramento, the California Grand Juror’s Association conference in Monterey, and additional meetings at the Jury House. Their dedication to the Grand Jury is noted and appreciated.

Justice Alito Delivered the Opinion of the Court in Case That Weakens Union Power

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/27/2018 08:46 AM
Washington, DC...From the Opinion of the Court.."Under Illinois law, public employees are forced to subsidize a union, even if they choose not to join and strongly object to the positions the union takes in collective bargaining and related activities. We conclude that this arrangement violates the free speech rights of nonmembers by compelling them to subsidize private speech on matters of substantial public concern.
