It’s time to don your dance duds and step out for a swingin’ good time at the Spring Swing, a brand new event presented by the Calaveras Mentoring Foundation to raise funds for the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program. Spring Swing will take place Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys and will feature dinner and dancing to the Big Band sounds of Rod Harris and the Columbia Kicks in a fun-filled evening with a live auction, a treasure chest key raffle, a live 'jukebox' and a contemporary twist on "dime-a-dance" girls....

Christopher Columbus Essay Contest Winner Announced

Jackson, CA...The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution in conjunction with the National Italian American Foundation sponsor an annual essay contest on Christopher Columbus. The Sierra Amador Chapter, NSDAR is pleased to announce this year’s chapter winner is Monique Salinger who is a 12th grade student at Argonaut High School. The essay contest was open to all students in grades 9 through 12 in public, private, parochial or home schools throughout Calaveras and Amador counties. Information regarding the essay contest was distributed to ten eligible schools in Calaveras County and five eligible schools in Amador County....

Chesnut of Columbia College will hold office hours on Thursday, February 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mother Lode Job Training Calaveras Office located at 700 Mountain Ranch Road, Ste. A in San Andreas. Columbia College will host additional office hours on Thursday, March 6 and Thursday, April 10. The purpose of the monthly office hours is to meet Calaveras residents who are new or potential of Columbia College students. Bret Harte Little League’s mission is to provide a fun and safe environment for the children in the area to play baseball. The League’s purpose is to create an atmosphere in which our players learn the lessons that playing baseball can provide them. These include teamwork, discipline, fair play, meeting challenges and developing a greater sense of self esteem through accomplishments. Additionally, the League strives to foster an organized effort for our parent and adult volunteers so they can assist our players with their development in baseball and in the virtues of character, citizenship, courage and loyalty.

California Agricultural Teachers’ Association Comments on Governor Brown’s Budget Proposal Eliminating Agricultural Education Incentive Grant

Sacramento, CA...In his 2014-15 State Budget released last week, Governor Brown proposed the complete elimination of funding for the Agricultural Education Incentive Grant, which supports high quality Agricultural Education standards in our public schools. This grant program is designed to provide matching funds for districts who commit to meeting state-approved program standards in Ag Education, including classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience projects, and leadership training through the Future Farmers of America (FFA) student organization....
