Murphys, CA ... The fresh new springtime fundraiser for the Mentoring Foundation had them swinging, waltzing and dancing the night away on Saturday night. Rod Harris and the Columbia Kicks delivered their distinctive style of Big Band dance music. Partygoers enjoyed a delicious multi-station 1950’s-themed buffet dinner with stops like Bobby’s Burger Barn, Bud’s Spuds, and Delilah’s Diner so they could get fueled up and ready to Tango...

Angels Camp, CA...(Frogtown)...The lead up to the 2014 Fair and Frog Jump Jubilee is well underway. The Miss Calaveras Field contains 14 local beauties who will vie for the coveted crown. In the knock down, no holds barred facial hair contest, David Howard won Best Beard, Mark Franz won Best Trimmed Facial Hair, Best Mustache, and Best Overall Facial Hair. Whiskerino dinner and dance was a great time!!! All profits were split 50/50 with the Junior Livestock and Friends of the Fair non profits. Junior livestock is funding this years livestock show and auction at the Calaveras County fair. Fun time for the whole family!!!

Yosemite National Park Reopens Areas Affected by Rim Fire |

Yosemite National Park, CA ... Yosemite National Park reopened areas that were previously closed because of the Rim Fire. All areas previously closed, including the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias and hiking trails in the Hetch Hetchy area, are now open to the public. Visitors traveling in the areas impacted by last year’s Rim Fire should be aware of potential risks including hazardous trees, uneven ground, potential rockfall, and down and dead debris on trails. Fire restrictions put in place last summer and fall have also been rescinded. It is possible, however, that fire restrictions may be needed later this year due to the extreme drought conditions found in California....

Calaveras Big Trees State Park, CA ... A seminar on bird life and a walk through the Sequoia grove will be offered as the first of a series of free programs planned for this year. Ed Pandilfino, author of the new UC Press book "Birds of the Sierra Nevada," will conduct the seminar between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday April 26 at historic Jack Knight Hall inside the state park. Those who want to start early are encouraged to join Pandilfino for a walk to take a look at local birds beginning at 8 a.m. Pandilfino is president of Western Field Ornithologists, and regional editor for the publication "North American Birds." For the past 25 years he has devoted his life to working in habitat conservation and avian research.His new book contains excellent discussions of birds of the Sierra, both biology and distribution, as well as excellent illustrations. The seminars are free, but there is a day use fee to enter the state park.

San Andreas, CA ...The Calaveras Air Fair, Fly-in and Open House is April 26at the Calaveras County Airport, four miles south of the town of San Andreas on Route 49. It’s an eclectic day of fancy planes, entertainment and a chance to take the family for a plane ride for just a few dollars. Think of it like a car show for airplanes, where plane owners from around the region fly in for the day and line up on the tarmac for spectators to admire and step inside. Local pilots will be ferrying passengers up into the sky for short rides and throughout the day and experimental and specialty planes will be performing flyovers.

The Sierra Nevada Film Festival celebrates its tenth year with a free film screening of "Tell It on the Mountain–Stories of the Pacific Crest Trail" at the Harlow Tasting Room on Saturday, April 19. 2014. Doors open 7pm for wine tasting. The film screens at sundown in the courtyard. The Newsome Harlow Tasting Room is located at 403 Main Street, Murphys CA. Admission is free. "Tell It on the Mountain–Stories of the Pacific Crest Trail" is part adventure film, part documentary, and part video journal.
