Failed Trailer Brakes Caused The Major Injury Big Rig Accident Closed Hwy 49 Yesterday

Mokelumne Hill, CA...A 57 year old San Jacinto man was driving a 2007 Freightliner The brakes on the tanker trailer that was loaded with concrete slurry failed on the grade. He was unable to keep control of the rig on the curves and grade just south of the Mokelumne River and the Amador County Line. The truck and tanker rolled onto the passenger side and collided with the guardrail and then continued over the side and off the roadway continuing to roll over and coming to rest on the driver side...

CUSD To Change Election System to By-Trustee Area In 2014

San Andreas, CA....On June 24, 2012 the Calaveras Unified School District Board of Trustees passed Resolution 2011/12-21 to initiate a change of our election system to a By-Trustee Area election commencing with the 2014 election. The County Committee on School District Organization approved CUSD’s resolution on September 24, 2012. A Public Hearing notification was sent notifying stakeholders of CUSD’s intent to apply for a General Waiver with the State Board of Education to propose a change to By-Trustee Area elections. The waiver was necessary to enable the Board to implement By-Trustee area elections in November 2014. The California Department of Education issued its Disposition Letter on May 16, 2013 informing CUSD that the General Waiver had been approved....

San Andreas, CA....A workshop to explore possible new career options is being held at the Calaveras office of Mother Lode Job Training on Tuesday, September 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The workshop is free but pre-registration is required. “Looking at new careers can seem frightening,” said workshop leader, Ernie LaCarra-Babor, a career counselor with Mother Lode Job Training. “We will share methods of self assessment that help guide you. It takes little time and yet shows you what you may have been overlooking.”

Railroad Flat Man Arrested for Assault with a Firearm

Railroad Flat, CA...On 09/01/13 at approximately 12:30 am, Calaveras Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatch to a residence on the 2300 block of Wagner Road in Railroad Flat for a report of a dispute involving firearms. Upon arrival the deputies spoke to three adult victims who reported that two males walked into their residence, pointed a shotgun and rifle at them, and accused them of being “rats”. One of the males, later identified as suspect Richard Gastelum, Jr. (34) of Railroad Flat, also pointed a handgun at the victims. During the incident one of the victims began to struggle with Suspect Gastelum when she feared that Gastelum was going to shoot her father. At the time of the incident there were also several children sleeping inside the home. Suspect Gastelum and the other male suspect fled the house and drove away....
