Bret Harte's Kaiya Hall Takes Top Spelling Bee Honors

San Andreas, CA...The 48th Annual Calaveras County Spelling Bee pitted the county’s top spellers against each other on Thursday, April 14th at the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks gymnasium. Assistant Superintendent Scott Nanik, the spelling moderator of the event, read words from the Marin County Junior High Spelling Word List. The students wrote the words down, and proctors checked the students’ efforts to spell them correctly. Each student was allowed to misspell three words before being disqualified.

Mrs. Hampton was a 50 year resident of Calaveras County, spending most of her childhood in White Pines, CA. She was a native of Oklahoma and very proud of her Cherokee Heritage.

Angels Camp Man Medi-Flighted From Hwy 4 Accident That Snarled Traffic

Vallecito, CA...A 69 year old Murphys man was driving his 1997 Chrysler Sebring in the Eastbound traffic lane of State Route 4 at approximately 50MPH. A 73 year old Angels Camp man was driving his 2008 Dodge Pickup in the Westbound traffic lane of State Route 4 at approximately 55MPH. The Murphys man due to his inattention to the roadway in front of him, allowed his vehicle to travel to the left of the solid double yellow center line. The Chrysler then struck the pickup. After the collision, the traveled to the left, off the north side of the roadway, and struck a concrete wall before coming to rest on its wheels facing in a Northerly direction. The Dodge pickup overturned and came to rest on its wheels facing in an Easterly direction blocking the eastbound traffic lane.
