Reno Nevada in 1959 was a very different place . . . good people including all of my close relatives lived in Reno or Sparks. The casinos were all downtown and those were for the tourists. Reno residents only went downtown to do business or have dinner. For some reason on an autumn day my Dad and Grandpa Matt took me downtown with them to do some business. Usually this meant the boy needed a haircut which was an experience in itself because the barber shop was a mans’ place with hunting and fishing magazines and some whopper stories. And the old black shoeshine man loved my naivety and would always pull some joke on me . . . but that got me a piece of candy. Loved that old guy . . ....

Murphys, CA....This week on Melly's Kitchen, Melanie Klann talks Appetizers.....“For me, the reason appetizers are so amazing is that every piece is sacred, especially made for each guest. It is easy to make a big tri-tip and boil some potatoes for 80 people, but appetizers are an individual creation. One bite can have so many different textures and flavors; sweet, salty, spicy, creamy, and on and on.” As a caterer, Melanie feels that creating appetizers or small plates is a great way to help her clients please all of their guests. There need to worry if some one doesn’t eat pork, is allergic to fish or isn’t eating carbs. Melanie shares her knowledge of ayurvedic traditions, “ By incorporating 5 or more sensations into one meal is more satisfying to the palate, and people tend to eat less, but enjoy themselves more!” Her recipe for Rich Polenta Cakes with Mushroom Sauce is enclosed for your tasting pleasure....

Angels Camp, CA.....Following an exciting JV game that ended with a 2 point victory for the Bears, the varsity Bullfrogs took an early lead in last night's matchup. The second period saw the Frogs staying just ahead of the Bears thanks in part to some excellent teamwork between Bret Harte's Matt Brechtel and Robbie Bragg. As the night went on Summerville pulled slowly ahead, despite a good dose of fancy footwork from Bret Harte's Jordan Gomez and some mighty good shooting by Alex Milward. The Bullfrogs made a strong last minute bid for victory, but the game went to Summerville, 59-54......
