Ramsey Fire Update...1,155 Acres, 80% Contained, Hwy 4 Now Open Without Restriction. Crews Starting to Demobilize

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/19/2012 10:41 AM
Ganns Meadow, CA...Summary: Fire crews will continue with Fire Suppression Repair objectives today. The objective of fire suppression repair is to minimize the potential for use of fire lines as future trails or confusion regarding proper route, and minimizing erosion and sediment movement on the fire line. Crews will also continued with patrolling established fire lines and mopping-up hot spots remaining in the interior of the fire. Steep terrain, heavy fuels adjacent to the line and limited access along the Stanislaus River continue to be concern for firefighters. Increased demobilization of resources will occur today from this incident to help support other incidents in the state....

"We own a cabin in Ganns Meadow, and my daughters make a thank you sign for everyone who helped protect our favorite place! Thank you also to everyone at thepinetree.net for the updates and photos that got us through this tough week!" Becky Pakulski

Ramsey Fire Update...1,155 Acres, 45% Contained, 477 Souls Battling Fire and 4 Injuries

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 08/17/2012 11:58 AM
Ganns Meadow, CA..Summary: There was some westward movement of the fire during the night shift with slow rates of spread. Steep terrain and limited access along the Stanislaus River is a major concern and are making direct line construction along the fire challenging for crews. There is still high potential for burning material to roll out over the control lines. Mop-up of the fire is slow due to the heavy amounts of fuels adjacent to the line and steep terrain.

Bill Goff, a lifelong resident of the county, expresses his gratitude to the crews that saved his new home (still under construction) in Ganns meadow.

A Bit ot Fire Lingo for You

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 08/15/2012 09:08 AM
Ganns Meadow, CA...With the Ramsey Fire there has been quite a bit of interest in the how the USFS categorizes fires. This was sent to us and contains some great information. A single tree would be a Type 5 incident – a truck goes out and monitors or puts it out. Type three teams will have some air support, maybe a hot shot crew or two (Type 1 ‘Elite’ firefighters) , some engines and maybe one or two Type 2 hand crews (less skilled than Hot Shot crews, but still skilled). The Forest has evaluated the local weather, fire behavior and resources at risk in the local area and determined a Type II Incident Management Team is in order. When the Forest “threw the switch” for a Type II team, trailers for offices, a portable mess hall, supplies for a supply cache, porta potties, hand washing units and other necessary items for a “Project Fire” were mobilized. A special group of “Overhead” management staff have also been called, people who’ve spent their careers working to fill jobs on Incident Management teams...

Sky High Ranch Subdivision Fire Update from Joel Barnett

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 08/15/2012 12:47 PM
Bear Valley, CA...I checked the fire again from Wes and Barbara’s house Weather Top, which is literally the highest house in Calaveras County. The fire remains +/- 2 miles away. It seems to be moving up the river canyon and the up the canyon walls. The bulk of the fire passed behind the old Ganns Meadow Inn and that cluster of cabins and the new log home at Ganns. There were vehicles and crew assigned to each structure, like sentries. It has burned right up to the highway in paces and jumped across the highway in little clumps, which are quickly put out. The burning front edge of the fire appears to now be up canyon and closer to us from Ganns....
