Our Video Chat with 10,000 Girls' &, One of this Year's Nominees for CNN "Hero of the Year"... Viola Vaughn

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 11/24/2008 10:01 PM
Angels Camp, CA....We had the great pleasure of sitting down with lovely Viola Vaughn, one of this year's nominees for CNN Hero of the Year. She was visiting Angels Camp World Mercantile on Monday afternoon taking a break from the CNN show taping in Los Angeles to come to Buttercup farm's Angels Camp World Mercantile. Viola is a native of Detroit, Michigan, and now lives in Senagal, Africa. She had worked in Africa for most of her life and considered it home. She decided to move back, after the sudden death of her 26 year old daughter who left five grandchildren to care for. She was searching for peace, "so she and her husband returned there to raise their new brood and "watch the coconut trees." Life had other plans for her. Shortly after moving to Senegal in 2000 her husband also passed away. Out of that grief and with the insistence of some local girls who wanted to improve their lives 10,000 Girls was born. Today, her "10,000 Girls" program is helping girls succeed in school and learn business skills. "10,000 Girls" runs a sewing workshop and the girls export their handmade dolls and household linens overseas. Angels Camp World Mercantile is the only store in the USA you can you purchase this fabulous handcrafted product line....
