Recent Week of Online Holiday Shopping Boasts Record $4.7 Billion in Spending as November-December Total Approaches $21 Billion

RESTON, Va.... On December 15th, comScore reported holiday season retail e-commerce spending for the first 43 days of the November - December 2009 holiday season. For the holiday season-to-date, nearly $21 billion has been spent online, marking a 4-percent increase versus the corresponding days last year. The most recent week ending December 13 reached $4.74 billion in spending, ranking as the heaviest online spending week on record. The previous high of $4.70 billion occurred during the week ending December 16, 2007....

New Jobless Claims Inch Up

Washington, DC...In the week ending Dec. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 480,000, an increase of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 473,000. The 4-week moving average was 467,500, a decrease of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of 472,750....

Angels Camp, CA...State Representative Tom Berryhill was on hand at Camps Restaurant at noon today talking to the Calaveras County Republican Party at their December meeting. He was on hand to say thank-you for the support he has received from the Calaveras County area and talk about his run to fill retiring Senator Cogdill's seat. If he is successful in his run his new district will no longer cover Calaveras County. The surprise retirement of Senator Dave Cogdill has set off a fury of activity within the Republican party to position their minority chess pieces in the most effective manner. Outgoing State Senator Jeff Denham had been campaigning for the Lieutenant Governor position. In changing races it gives the Republican Party a very solid candidate with good statewide recognition and also paves the way for Governor Schwarzenegger's pick of Able Maldonado an easier run at election time...

Producer Price Index Up In November 1.8%

Washington, DC...The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods rose 1.8 percent in November, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This increase followed a 0.3-percent advance in October and a 0.6-percent decrease in September. In November, at the earlier stages of processing, prices received by manufacturers of intermediate goods climbed 1.4 percent, and the crude goods index rose 5.7 percent. On an unadjusted basis, prices for finished goods moved up 2.4 percent for the 12 months ended November 2009, their first 12-month increase since November 2008.

Consumer Reports Index: Retail Improves in November With a Strong Outlook for December

YONKERS, N.Y....Despite lackluster retail numbers since August '09, consumers have increased their retail spending markedly in November and the outlook for planned purchasing in December is strong, according to the Consumer Reports Index, Dec '09 report. The Consumer Reports Past 30-Day Retail Index (purchases made in November) has risen 24 percent, climbing to 11.2 from 9.0 last month. The outlook for planned purchases in the next 30 days is at 12.2 up from 9.0 the prior month an increase of 36 percent. The major gains in retail spending are led by personal electronics, major electronics and small appliance purchasing...

November Retail Sales Up Over Last Year

Washington, DC...The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for November, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $352.1 billion, an increase of 1.3 percent (±0.5%) from the previous month and 1.9 percent (±0.5%) above November 2008. Total sales for the September through November 2009 period were down 2.1 percent (±0.3%) from the same period a year ago. The September to October 2009 percent change was revised from +1.4 percent (±0.5%) to +1.1 percent (±0.2%)...
