Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 08/18/2009 10:46 AM
|
To grow robust, juicy tomatoes in the foothills, gardeners may need to protect plants from scorching August heat. Tomatoes generally thrive in full sun and warm weather, and some newer varieties can even withstand intense evening heat. But when nighttime temperatures remain above 75° F, blossoms often drop off tomato plants and fruit production stops....

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 08/12/2009 10:25 AM
|
Herbal iced tea is a great way to beat summer heat, especially in August, when garden-grown herbal mints begin to mature. Two of the more popular herbs for teas are spearmint and peppermint. Spearmint is the most common of the garden mints with toothed, lance-shaped leaves. Peppermint leaves are broader and more oval....

Garden Harvest in August~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 08/08/2009 11:41 AM
|
Harvesting vegetables at the right stage is critical for optimum quality and taste. Pick stringless or garden green beans when pods are full-sized and when enclosed beans or seeds are about one-quarter of their mature size. Harvest them before they begin to shrivel. Harvest fresh lima beans when pods are well filled but not overmature. Mature seed or beans will be green and tender. Pick both lima and green beans often to encourage continuous production.....

If you have an oak tree growing in your yard you may notice a strange phenomenon occurring this year. The ground beneath many oaks is covered with pinhead-sized yellow or brown seedlike objects, most of which are hopping around. The tiny things are called “jumping oak galls”, and are formed by a tiny, dark wasp. The wasp belongs to an interesting family of wasps called the “cynipids.”....

Plant more carrots now for fall and winter~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/29/2009 12:49 PM
|
Carrots can still be planted through July for fall and winter harvest in most areas of the foothills. In higher elevation areas in July, plant only shorter season varieties with 50 to 60 days to maturity. Most seed packets list days-to-maturity information. Carrots grow best in deep, well-drained sandy or peaty soils. Raised beds, worked to a depth of 12 to 15 inches, provide optimum drainage and allow for maximum root length and smoothness. Hard soil clods, uncomposted manure or fertilizer granules may cause carrots to fork, become hairy and crooked. A soil pH of 6.0 to 7.0 is optimal....

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/21/2009 11:21 AM
|
That black widow spider you may have found in your garage, crawlspace or woodpile is far from a lonely old widow. She’s got plenty of company in our foothill region. The un-patterned, unsightly webs that black widow spiders build in undisturbed places are smaller than fist-sized, but the bite of the adult female really packs a punch. You’ll know if you’ve been bitten, as even a healthy adult, will develop an intense, wrenching pain—like you’ve been hit in the stomach.....
