Habitat for Humanity Warehouse to Open More Days

Calaveras County, CA....Beginning March 25 through May 1 the Habitat for Humanity Calaveras Warehouse will be open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, in addition to the usual first and third Saturdays of each month. The Warehouse is a discount building materials reuse outlet store at 172 California St., San Andreas. The Warehouse will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m Wednesdays through Fridays for a six week trial period and as usual from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the first and third Saturdays of each month....

Frogtown, USA.....Every 4th and 5th grade student in Calaveras County was invited to come learn more about local Agriculture today as they celebrated Ag Awareness Day at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds today. This translates into around 1,000 students. This event was sponsored and hosted by Calaveras Farm Bureau and the Calaveras County Fair. Each student attended eight 15 minute sessions about many different areas of agriculture in our county. This was an opportunity for students to become more aware of the resources and rich heritage of .....

Foothill gardeners should consider growing blackberries this season. They thrive in our climate and soils, and March is the time to plant them. Blackberries grow best in full sun. They do well in most soils but they prefer deep, well-drained sandy loams with a pH (acid content) of 6.5 to 7.5. Add 1 to 2 inches of compost and 1 to 2 pounds of phosphorus fertilizer per 1000 square feet for good root development during the first growing season. Do not plant in areas with perennial weeds....

For productive plants and quality vegetables, take time now to plan the layout and design of home vegetable gardens before tilling the soil. Choosing an appropriate site for planting depends on the number of family members consuming the produce, how much time the gardener has to care for plants and available yard space. If possible, plan to plant an extra few rows and donate the produce to the food bank....
