Ray Pekarcik Honored as May 2019 Mentor of the Month

Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is honored to announce Valley Springs resident Ray Pekarcik as its Mentor of the Month for May 2019. Ray has been matched with his 14-year-old mentee, Mike, for over a year, but he has been a part of the Mentoring Program since 2012. Ray was matched with his first mentee for four years. “I decided to continue with the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program after my first match because I find it to be personally rewarding. I know that I made a difference in some small way,” said Ray.

Calaveras Tourism Leaps to $205.3 Million in 2018

Angels Camp, CA...This week, Dean Runyan published its tourism numbers compiled for Visit California, and we showed a healthy pattern of continued growth for our tourism economy in Calaveras County. Calaveras Tourism is an economic heavy hitter. Preliminary data for 2018 shows an increase of 5% from $195.5 million to $205.3 million in overall tourism spending in Calaveras County.

Sacramento, CA...The East Lawn at State Capitol played host to Calaveras County's Celebrated Jumping Frogs this morning for the 45th Annual State Capitol Frog Jump. The frogs were accompanied by their entourage of volunteer Frog Jump Committee members. Last year more than 50 elected officials, legislative staffers and media representatives vied for bragging rights and the opportunity to move on to the Jumping Frog Jubilee Grand Finals.

Arnold, CA...The Ebbetts Pass Fire District (EPFD) Board of Directors is sponsoring “Measure A,” which is a special tax measure that will fund the continued operation of fire, ambulance and paramedic services to the Upper Highway 4 Corridor. The Fire District serves community members who live in the 225-square-mile District along Highway 4 between Forest Meadows and Bear Valley. The EPFD Board of Directors put forth Measure A to address a $400,000 budget deficit the District is currently facing. If Measure A does not pass, fire, ambulance and paramedic services will have to be cut starting July 1, 2019. Eligible voters will receive ballots in the mail in early April and those ballots must be mailed to the Calaveras County Elections Office by May 7, 2019. In order to pass, Measure A must receive a two-thirds majority, meaning 66.67% of voters must vote “Yes”.
