Umpqua Bank in Valley Springs Burglarized

Valley Springs, CA...On 01/22/14 at approx. 10:25 pm, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Umpqua Bank on Highway 26 in Valley Springs for an alarm. Deputies arrived on scene within minutes of the alarm notification. While searching the bank deputies found ceiling tiles that had fallen to the floor. During the investigation it was discovered that the suspect climbed onto the roof and entered the bank through a vent. Once inside the bank the suspect activated the alarm system. Several drawers were ransacked, but nothing appeared to have been stolen. The suspect was able to flee the scene just prior to the arrival of the deputies....

Federlein Family Fund Donates to Calaveras Community Foundation

Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) has been the recipient of over $81,000 over the past several years from The Federlein Family Fund at the San Francisco Foundation specifically to benefit area seniors. An additional generous grant of $20,000 received in December enabled CCF to provide surprise grants to various local organizations. These funds are in memory of Lloyd Federlein....

As the Drought picture becomes clear, CCWD will implement appropriate programs and policies to address water conservation. At this time, the district is advising that all measures are voluntary. While water supplies may be challenged during the upcoming year; good stewardship of the districts’ resources may be adequate to avoid mandatory restrictions...

Thomas Edward Duke 1925 -2014

Valley Springs, CA...He was born on September 3, 1925 in Phoenix, Arizona to Thomas Brennan and Emma Green Duke. After graduating from Calaveras High School in 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a machinist mate on the USS Terror in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war ended, he was employed by Calaveas Tire and later Doherty Tire Corporation and Duke's Tire Service where he sold and serviced tires for Calaveras Unified School District, Calaveras County offices and residents of the county for 40 years...
