Sheriff DiBasilio Retires After 21 Years of Service

San Andreas, CA...August 9, 2024, marked the official last day of Sheriff DiBasilio’s twenty-one-year career with the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff DiBasilio began his Calaveras County law enforcement career when he graduated from the police academy as a sponsored recruit in March 2003. He quickly advanced from Patrol Deputy to School Resource Officer, where he built strong relationships with school administrators and students. At this point in his career, he became affectionately known as “Sheriff Rick” to hundreds of Calaveras County students.

In 2005, Sheriff DiBasilio joined the SWAT Team, where he served actively until 2017- one year after he became Sheriff. During his time on the SWAT Team, he was involved in several missions that required advanced tactical skills and teamwork. This experience contributed to his leadership abilities and understanding of critical incidents, enhancing his effectiveness in his subsequent role as Sheriff.

Sheriff DiBasilio ended his career with many accolades, including the Ben Ali Shriners School Resource Officer of the Year and Deputy of the Year awards in 2006. After being promoted to Corporal in 2007, he was transferred to the Investigations Unit where he focused on critical investigations for four years, particularly in elder and child abuse cases.

In August 2015, Sheriff DiBasilio was promoted to Sergeant and became a patrol division supervisor. In October 2015, Sheriff Gary Kuntz passed away while serving as the Calaveras Sheriff, leaving a vacancy and a void in the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. After an arduous round of interviews, Sheriff DiBasilio was appointed as the twenty-third Sheriff of Calaveras County on May 10, 2016.

After proving himself to citizens and staff alike, Sheriff DiBasilio successfully won re-election to Sheriff in 2018. In 2022 he ran unopposed for the position, indicating a strong consensus regarding his performance and the public's confidence in his ability to lead the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff DiBasilio attributes his greatest accomplishment, which he summarizes as “Unity,” to his ability to lead and foster collaboration between the Sheriff’s Office, the community, and allied agencies. His diverse skills, experience, and interpersonal abilities have contributed to his effectiveness as Sheriff, impacting the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office and the community it serves.

Sheriff DiBasilio, we are deeply grateful for your service and dedication to making Calaveras safer for everyone. Your commitment has truly made a lasting impact on our community.
