Martin Huberty Running for Calaveras Board of Supervisors

Murphys, CA...Martin R. Huberty is running for Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, District 3; the seat is currently held by Merita Callaway, who is stepping down. Huberty is the executive director of the Calaveras Visitors Bureau, the Calaveras Chamber of Commerce, the Calaveras Film Commission and the Angels Camp Museum. Additionally, he sits on the board of the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance and Murphys Creek Theater.

The Huberty family immigrated to Calaveras County in the 1850s from Luxembourg; they established the Huberty Ranch in 4th Crossing. The Huberty Ranch brand was the first registered brand in the county. Martin spent his childhood summers and weekends on the Huberty Ranch in San Andreas or at the family cabin on Lake Alpine. The impact of the family can still be felt today, as a part of not only Calaveras history, but the clan has made its mark on the history of California as well. Martin continues the family legacy by making Calaveras his home and giving back to many community organizations.

John Huberty, immigrated from Luxembourg to Calaveras County in search of gold, and opened the American RestaurantIn San Andreas, know home to the Calaveras Archives.

Huberty grew up Sacramento, next door to then Governor Ronald Regan and his family. After graduating from UC Davis, he moved to New York, Los Angeles and London.

Although most of his life and career were spent traveling the world, in his words,

“I don’t feel at home anywhere else but Calaveras County.”

In 2002, he and his partner, Grant Armstrong, purchased a Gold Rush era industrial building in Murphys that they painstakingly restored as their permanent residence. The home also provides a dramatic setting for their comprehensive collection of Calaveras County artifacts and antiques.

His career in the motion picture industry spans more than three decades and he has has produced, written and directed a number of award winning and Oscar nominated feature and short films. His current project is a full length feature film about his great, great grandmother’s journey to Calaveras county. Before returning permanently to Calaveras County in 2018, Huberty was the Chief of Staff with the York household in the British Royal Family. Huberty is currently scheduling public appearances and speaking engagements in District 3, which has recently been expanded from Tamarac to Vallecito along Highway 4. To schedule him, please send an email to martin@huberty4calaveras.com.

Huberty’s great, great grandmother, the subject of his next feature length film. Her dairy is considered one of the first travel journals of the Yosemite Valley into Calaveras county.

So the truth is, this guy just recently showed up in this county. I would consider him a Johnny come lately. That’s great that his family has history but he doesn’t!! He seems to represent the influx of those that come to us from locations that have been destroyed by bad governing.

You've got to applaud Mr. Huberty's civic mindedness. However, 6 commitments to other civic organizations plus a board position, which is a fulltime job, is going to leave something shortchanged. Unless, he isn't currently doing squat for those other organizations.
On those grounds alone he would not get my vote.

Maybe he is so efficient that those organizations are well managed. Maybe he is a great leader and empowers the staff .
By combining the CVB and the museum he saves the city $200,000 a year. 🤷🏻

So what is the residential requirement in your mind to run for office? 4 years , 5 years of residence?
We should then apply that across the board. To some of our state/national representatives.
Martin gets my vote. He addresses all the "issues" some of you had with Merita.

I don't think it's so much a question of years living here, as it is his lived experience, and how it informs and shapes his understanding of our county/community. Don't quite see the connection between world citizen/filmmaker to our day to day local realities.

Supervising huge projects with lots of players requires leadership, and the ability to negotiate. Imagine the budget he had to manage.
If he can run the royal family - maybe he can wrangle the politics of the BoS and the agencies it supervises. Not sure a real estate agent has any experience even close to his.

He spent his summers in the county on the family property. Purchased the old Utica Powerhouse above Murphys about 20 years ago and coverted it into a home and moved to Murphys permanently in 2018. His time out of the county gave him the experience that is so often lacking in local leadership.

If I read the story correctly, his family has been paying taxes in this county for 160 years - and Huberty himself for at least 40. His primary home has been here 20 years. So not sure why he is a Johnny Come Lately?

Residency isn’t near as important as integrity, competence, diplomacy and the ability to get stuff done. Comparing the candidates side by side - it seems like a no brainer to me.

I have known Martin for years. He is not a newbie here, just has worldly experiences. He shows up supportive at many community events. He has done wonders with his sense of fiscal responsibility in any organization he is a part of. That is something so badly needed on the BOS and certainly in D-3. I cannot say that about the challenger. Disagree with her about anything and you are treated as the enemy. We need open-minded representation. Given the 2 choices, it's Martin hands down for my family.

Mr. Hubert’s has a lot to offer and the strongest candidate running but truth be told, I’d be surprised if an openly gay man could be elected in Calaveras County. Perhaps District 3 will prove the exception. We certainly need someone of his integrity and professionalism.

Looking like some damn poor choices for District 3 supervisor. Too bad, the district deserves better.

Not sure why you think they are poor choices Explain? Unfortunately, the deadline has passed, and these are the only 2 candidates. Do you have any suggestions for next time? Anyone you can encourage to run?

There are some valid concerns and questions here. Perhaps attending a Meet the Candidate at the Bistro or Gold Country Roasters would be a good way to address concerns or ask Martin questions directly. Anonymous comments on the Pine Tree, while entertaining, do not help make an informed decision. And this decision is an important one.

Not a fan of Lisa and he crazy and or her scary antics!! Martin is to far up S.H. ass to realize what is going on except for pushing her own agenda. I vote for C none of the two choices for D3.

Not sure what most of this post means. However, perhaps you should run. Or make suggestions for another candidate. The more engaged our citizens are, the better off the county is. Amirite?

He won’t be getting our vote! Too much Hollywood for us, if you know what I mean!
