Monitor Pass, State Route 89 Opens for Summer Season Today

Alpine County, CA..The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has removed the winter snow, cleared the debris and made the necessary repairs to open State Route 89 (SR89) over Monitor Pass today at 3:00 p.m. The diligent work of Caltrans crews enabled the opening of the pass for motorists and cyclists. Monitor Pass is one of four in District 10 that typically close late in the fall – prior to the start of the snow season – and then open in spring after the roads have been cleared and inspected.

The other locations are Ebbetts Pass/SR-4, Sonora Pass/SR-108 and Tioga Pass/SR-120. Tioga Pass is in Yosemite National Park, and that roadway is maintained by park personnel. There is no estimated time of opening for the other three prominent passes in District 10. Caltrans crews responsible for the Monitor Pass opening extend their best wishes for safe summer traveling to those who enjoy the recreational opportunities that the region has to offer.

Winter weather and road conditions can change rapidly. Motorists should expect the worst conditions and be prepared when traveling in areas subject to hazardous conditions. All vehicles, including those with four-wheel drive or snow tires should, additionally, carry chains when traveling during snowy weather.

For the latest in highway information please call our Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD(7623).
