Justice Rasmussen and Zac Comstock Perform Well at the Junior Olympics~By Mike Comstock

Bear Valley,CA....As we mentioned before, two young men from the Bear Valley Ski Team qualified for the Junior Olympics in Bogus Basin, ID., which were held last weekend. Friday was SG training day. This was the first opportunity Zac and Justice have had to ski a REAL Super G course......A few stats Course length was 1869 meters which is 6132 feet, yep that is well over 1 mile. Vertical drop was 374 meters or 1227 feet. Racers were reaching speeds of over 63 mph. The course had 4 jumps on it with the largest being in the bottom section of the course launching skiers 40+ feet down the hill even with a good pre-jump......

After Friday's training run, the real deal took place on Saturday. There are 95 J3 Men competing throughout the weekend. Zac and Justice started 52nd and 84th respectively. (I have yet to understand the start list seeding....it is not done on exclusively on Race Points). Zac finished 71st and Justice came in 76th. While these finishes don't sound impressive, the race results are stacked very tight since these are the best racers in the Western US. Zac and Justices times were only 2 seconds ( on an average of 1:15:00 -1:20:00) off a top 30 placement. The winning time was 1:12:10 but only the top 5 competitors were under 1:15:00. Ten competitors were DNF.(did not finish)

Sunday Junior Olympics Report
Sunday was "GS Day" for the Men at this year's Junior Olympics. The start positions did not favor Justice and Zac today as Justice started 92nd out of 95 and Zac started next to last at 94.

The course was set on two consecutive runs, Ridge and Bowl. The top started out fairly flat then increased its pitch. The transition to Bowl took the course down a long bowl with a long steep top section finally flattening out at the finish area.

On the first run both Justice and Zac put in solid, competitive runs with times of 58.93 and 58.26 respectively. The two fastest times were in the 53's but all others were in the 55-58 range. On the second run both guys finished but Justice DQ'd, missing a gate. Zac stepped up the pace and turned in a 56.84 to take 44th place....not to bad for starting 94th. In fact, Zac's jump of 50 places from his start to finish position almost earned him the "Hard Charger" Award, missing out only to a competitor who jumped from 81st to 16th place.

Monday JO Report
Over the course of the JOs, the weather has deteriorated a bit each day. Moving from a sunny, blue sky day on Saturday, to a chill overcast Sunday and finishing with a snowy Monday, the Men were lucky to have had good weather for their speed events.

Start positions for Monday's SL were a bit more favorable to the guys with Zac starting 77th and Justice starting 84th. Zac's first run time was 48.13 and Justice's was a 49.09. The fastest first run time was a 41.29 by Andrew Kircher (I think he is a World Cup racer masquerading as a 14 year old....how many 6' - 225 lb 14 year olds do you know??) There were a couple of of 42s but most of the field was in the 44-48 second range.

On the second run, Justice unfortunately fell and DQ'd near the end of the course, dashing his comeback run. With the second set being a bit faster, Zac stepped up his time to a 46.35 for a combined time of 1:34:48 placing him in 59th.
