Suspect Attempts to Stab Deputy During Domestic Violence Incident

Wallace, CA...On 11-10-17 at approx. 9:25pm Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence on Cottontail Lane in Wallace. The reporting party who called dispatch stated a male subject at that location was intoxicated, armed with a knife, and possibly suicidal.

Upon deputies’ arrival an argument was heard inside between a male and a female. Deputies were directed to a bathroom where they found a male suspect armed with a knife and a female attempting to get him to put the weapon down. The female was cut from the suspect with the knife and deputies were able to remove her safely from the area. Deputies began negotiating with the armed suspect for about an hour during which time the male subject made multiple suicidal statements and refused to set the knife down.

Several sheriff’s deputies, with the assistance from the Angels Camp Police Department, made numerous attempts througho ut this hour for the subject to peacefully surrender. Law enforcement on scene then made several attempts to take this subject into custody using less than lethal means. Law enforcement officers deployed a less lethal bean bag round striking the subject. Instead of surrendering, the male suspect began cutting himself in the upper body with the knife. In an attempt to stop this behavior, a second bean bag round was deployed striking the subject, with little effect. A law enforcement officer then deployed a Taser, again effectively striking the subject who resisted through the Taser affects.

A physical altercation ensued during which time the male suspect attempted to stab a Sheriff’s Corporal with the knife. The knife was taken away from the suspect by use of baton strikes. Multiple law enforcement officers were then able to take the subject into custody. After the subject was handcuffed, medical personnel were called in to immediately render first aide. The s uspect was transported to an out of county trauma center to be treated for the self-inflicted stab wounds. That suspect is still hospitalized and expected to survive.

During victim and witness interviews, deputies learned that the male and female are from Oregon and were in town visiting family. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is seeking charges through the District Attorney’s Office against the male suspect for charges of 245(a)(1)PC – assault with a deadly weapon, 273.5PC – inflict corporal injury on spouse, 148(a)(1)PC-resisting arrest, 243(b)PC – assault on a peace officer, 245(c)PC – assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
