Crandall Underburn on the Stanislaus National Forest Starts January 22nd

Sonora, CA....For Immediate Release If conditions permit, the Stanislaus National Forest will conduct a broadcast underburn of approximately 166 acres on the Mi-Wok Ranger District January 22nd through Feb. 5th. The project area is located off Italian Bar Road (2n63) - North of South Fork River, South of Deer Creek at specific geographic location [sections 29 & 30, range 16E, township 3N]. Smoke may be visible from Hwy 108 in the Mi-Wuk or Long Barn area...

The goal of this prescribed burn is to enhance public and firefighter safety by maintaining a fuel break and further reducing the threat of high-intensity wildfire in order, and to protect watershed values and wildlife habitat by creating a mosaic pattern of vegetation.

Prescribed burning is an effective, cost-efficient method of reducing flammable, forest fuels generated from forest projects.

Prescribed, low-intensity fires enhance wildlife habitat, protect and maintain water quality and soil productivity, improve forest ecosystem health, and reduce the threat of uncontrolled wildfires. The Sierra Nevada is a fire-dependent ecosystem where fire is part of the natural forest process.

This project is a planned, prescribed fire. Please do not report as a wildland fire. Thank you for your cooperation.
