Copperopolis Man Claims Robbery So Wife Wouldn't Find Out He Spent Money

Sonora, CA... On 12/18/13 about 10:30 A.M. Tuolumne County Deputies, CHP and Sonora P.D. were dispatched to the Junction Shopping Center on a report of a robbery. Fifty Four year old Joseph Garcia, of Copperopolis reported that he had been robbed at knifepoint in the Junction parking lot of 1400.00. Garcia gave a description of the alleged suspect. Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Deputies, Tuolumne County Narcotics Team, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Detectives, CHP and Sonora PD began an extensive area check for the suspect. Several people matching the description were contacted by law enforcement and interviewed....

Garcia had a small abrasion to his forehead and a complaint of pain to his abdomen area. He claimed he was injured during the robbery. Garcia was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office Detectives met with Garcia at the hospital to continue with the investigation. Tuolumne County Deputies remained at the Junction Shopping Center to complete the crime scene investigation.

During the course of the investigation Deputies found the wallet Garcia reported stolen in Garcia’s vehicle. At the hospital six hundred and twenty dollars in cash was found in Garcia’s shoe. During a follow up interview by the Detectives with Garcia at the hospital he admitted to making up the entire robbery story and no robbery had occurred. When questioned as to why he made up the robbery story he stated that, He (Garcia) had spent money he should not have and did not want his wife to find out about it.

Garcia was released from Sonora Regional Medical Center and booked into Tuolumne County Jail for 148.5(A) P.C. Filing a False Report. He was released from the jail later that day with a citation for a future court appearance.

Garcia’s actions resulted in tying up numerous resources from the Sheriff’s Office, CHP, Sonora PD, Tuolumne County Ambulance, and SRMC. Basically, reducing the amount of resources that were available to the rest of the county. Garcia’s actions also caused undue fear in the community that a robbery involving a suspect that was not located at occurred at the Junction Shopping Center.

Charges: 148.5(A) P.C. False Report of a Crime

Location: Junction Shopping Center

Suspect: Garcia, Joseph, Martin
54 years of age
Resident of Copperopolis, CA
