Help With The Woes of Winter

Angels Camp, CA...The winter months bring cold weather, shorter days, and treacherous driving and walking conditions, which can lead to increased risk of falling on slippery or uneven surfaces. However, one does not have to accept that a fall this winter IS as an unavoidable inconvenience. Physical therapy may be the option to help minimize fall risk and avoid possible injuries that may arise from experiencing a fall....

Physical therapy aims to help maximize function by reducing the physical impairments for an individual. Physical therapy is not only beneficial with reducing pain and weakness following an injury, but it can play a powerful role in preventing injuries as well. For instance, balance is a trainable skill that many neglect to work on as part of their normal fitness routine. With the assistance of a skilled physical therapist, balance can be improved and the risk of falling can be reduced significantly. Physical therapists can recommend use of an appropriate assistive device (if needed), improve strength and endurance, enhance balance reactions through an appropriate training program, and increase overall fitness for an individual to allow them to adapt better to adverse conditions.

A physical therapist can also advise on proper body mechanics which can prevent injuries due to overuse and improper ergonomics while doing winter chores, like shoveling snow and hauling wood. To help prevent injuries, Pinnacle Physical Therapy offers Spine and Body Mechanics Training twice a month in Angels Camp with basic information on performing daily activities in a more spine-friendly way.

Contact a physical therapist to begin preventing injuries. Spine and Body Mechanics Training at Pinnacle Physical Therapy is open to the public, but does require a reservation".
