Columbia College presents “Animate Objects” Art Show

Columbia, CA...The “Animate Objects” art show will be on display in the Columbia College Manzanita Building Rotunda, January 3 through January 24, 2013. The Rotunda is open to view the show Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You might be most familiar with the “animus” or lively spirit embodied in an artwork as it is manifested in Wordworth’s poem “I Wandered lonely as a Cloud”. . .

“… Ten Thousand (daisies) saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in spritely dance. . .”

This “animus” can be defined as human characteristics embodied in the very creation of artworks. It is the solid technical know-how which frees the work up to contain such amazing characteristics. This lively spirit or "animus" is a consistent element presented in the exhibit “Animate Objects” currently on display in the Columbia College Rotunda.

This exhibit offers art works by California Artists Sifu Berchtold, Marta Magistrali along with paintings by Diana Boyd. Berchtold and Magistrali present ceramic objects created in the methods of Raku, Anagama and Glaze firing techniques. The resulting "gifts from the fire" are artworks that truly display the presence of the “animus”.

These ceramic works are complemented by the spirited paintings of Diana Boyd whose still-life and animal images combine expressionistic moves while capturing realist light. These Expressionistic paintings sing the notes of painters across time from Pierre Bonnard to Elmer Bischoff and Joan Brown, to name only a few.
