Columbia College Offers Nature Photography Course Taught by National Geographic Photographer

Columbia, CA...National Geographic photographer Phil Schermeister will teach a nature photography course this spring 2013 on the Columbia College campus in Sonora, CA. The course, ART 45 Field Photography (section 2148) begins January 18th and will meet Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:10 p.m...

The course is an introduction to producing professional quality nature photographs and will focus on basic camera techniques as well as field trips to many of the beautiful natural locations of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Students will utilize adjustable digital cameras and learn basic camera functions such as depth of field correct exposure, bracketing and use of filters and flash. All types of lenses including telephoto, wide angle and macro will be demonstrated and used. Students will also learn digital workflow and picture editing techniques. Ample time with the instructor in field locations will be afforded both to learn the basics of nature photography and to develop personal photographic style.

Freelance photographer Phil Schermeister has completed dozens of natural history assignments for the National Geographic Society during the past twenty years across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He has photographed numerous national parks, seashores, wildlife refuges and wild and scenic rivers. His book, Range of Light: the Sierra Nevada, was published by National Geographic’s Book Division.
