Japanese Educators Visit V.U.S.D. to See Student iPad Use

Avery, CA...Educators from the Okinawa Amicus International School in Japan recently paid a visit to Hazel Fischer Elementary School and Avery Middle School, an Apple Distinguished School, to see first-hand how the two schools are implementing one-on-one student iPad computing in grades K-8. The Japanese teachers had read in the popular Japanese interior design and lifestyle magazine, Casa Brutus, about Hazel Fischer's iPad implementation in a feature article about the 5th grade class and its collaboration with the tech lab coordinator at the school. During their visit, they also explored policies and practices that facilitate students at Avery Middle School taking home and using school iPads for even greater access to one-to-one computing.

The Hazel Fischer Parents Club hosted a staff and student reception for the visiting educators at the Black Bear Inn on October 1 in Arnold. There the collaboration between countries continued around the in's and out's of technology use in schools by young students. The cultural and technological exchange allowed for extensive discussion about wireless connectivity, internet filtering, and the versatility of student and teacher hand-held computing devices. Also, Vallecito Union School District staff shared how they have successfully partnered with primary classrooms, allowing 5th grade students to tutor and become "iPad buddy classes" with kindergarteners through 4th graders.

As a result of this international collaboration, both the Amicus School in Japan and Vallecito Union School District schools were enriched and plan to further their fledgling partnership by keeping in touch and collaborating on future technology projects. The visitors remarked on how impressed they were with the school communities and the excellent students in the Vallecito Union School District.

More information about the Vallecito Union School District's Strategic Plan and iPad implementation can be found at www.vusd.wikispaces.net or on any one of the VUSD school site's Facebook pages.
