CUSD Virtual Academy to offer Information Night for prospective parents and students.
COUNTYWIDE – Sierra Hills Education Center will offer an information night at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, for prospective students and parents of Calaveras Unified School District’s K-12 blended, online independent study program. The session will be held in the CUSD Board Room, 3304 Highway 12 east of Valley Springs....
Sierra Hills supports parental choice, while providing access to a rigorous, standards-based college preparatory curriculum in grades kindergarten through 12th grades. This accredited online school allows students to experience learning from virtually anywhere a computer will take them. The curriculum is provided through a partnership with CompassLearning, a national online program. All courses are aligned to the State of California’s standards. Classes span from core subjects to a wide variety of electives with a strong emphasis on building 21st Century and critical thinking skills.
What makes SHEC stand out above traditional home-school programs is the option for students to be dual-enrolled at Calaveras High School, Toyon Middle School or any of the district’s elementary schools. Students may take band, art, auto shop or even a foreign language, for example. Students may also play Mother Lode League high school sports.
Each SHEC student has an individualized plan for his or her course of study. The flexibility and pacing allows for accelerated learning as well as remediation of areas below standard. Student learning is guided by credentialed CUSD teachers. Students meet with their teachers weekly and have access to their teachers in person, via email and over the phone. Parents play an active role in the learning process to support their child’s learning.
SHEC is part of a free public education system. It is open to students living in Calaveras, Amador, Tuolumne, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties. For more information about Sierra Hills and its programs, please attend the May 30 information night or call (209)754-2328.
