Grant from Save the Redwoods League to Calaveras Big Trees Visitor Center

ARNOLD, CA (April 12, 2012) — The Calaveras Big Trees Association (CBTA) has received an $83,000 grant from Save the Redwoods League toward work on a new visitor center at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The funds will allow CBTA to complete design work and furnish the Center's book store and the offices used by volunteers and CBTA staff. The multi-million-dollar visitor center project is being built with funds from state park construction bonds, $500,000 in donations raised over a period of more than 15 years by CBTA, and the donation from Save the Redwoods League...

The two buildings that will comprise the completed Center will include a museum exhibit hall, expanded training facilities to accommodate more students, volunteers, interpreters and staff, a bookstore and reception area, and improved access to the North Grove hiking trail where visitors enjoy the giant Sequoia trees.

The Calaveras Big Trees Association is grateful for the League's support and commitment to improving the visitor experience while improving work conditions for staff and docents. “We’ve worked with the League since the beginning of the conservation movement in 1926, when a group of passionate individuals fought diligently to protect redwood forests in California,” said Marilyn Regan, president of the Calaveras Big Trees Association. “Much of what we’ve accomplished over the last 80 years was due in large part to the League’s generosity.”

The new center will welcome visitors with an inviting entrance where they will be inspired to learn about the park and redwoods and be encouraged to purchase books and memorabilia that support the park's educational and interpretive programs. The new visitor center is tentatively scheduled to be complete by spring 2013.

“We are delighted to help one of our longtime partners, the Calaveras Big Trees Association,” said Ruskin K. Hartley, Save the Redwoods League executive director. “Especially in challenging economic times like these, we are committed to our long term vision of protecting and enhancing parks for everyone to enjoy. The more visitors enjoy these special places, the more they will want to protect them.”

About Save the Redwoods League
Since 1918, Save the Redwoods League has protected and restored redwood forests and connected people with their peace and beauty so these wonders of the natural world flourish. Unfortunately, some ancient redwoods remain unprotected, and forests that are protected face threats from a changing environment, disease and devastating government budget cuts. Donations help us save these special places, allowing us to purchase redwood land, restore logged forests, research how to best protect them and teach children and adults about these magical expressions of life. To date the League has completed the purchase of more than 189,000 acres of redwood forest and associated land.
