Winds and Strings Featured in Classical Concert!

The Mother Lode Friends of Music, the regional organization for classical music performances, presents its first concert of the new year on Sunday, January 29, starting at 2 p.m. in the Church of the Nazarene, 14050 Ridge Road, in Sutter Creek. The concert is free and open to the public. The concert will feature selections for wind quintet, a combination comprising flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon that has been popular with composers for over two hundred years. One of the earliest works of the genre, the Quintet in G minor by Beethoven’s contemporary Franz Danzi, will highlight .....

the program. Also performed will be the Pastoral of 20th-century American composer Vincent Persichetti and La Cheminée du Roi René by French composer Darius Milhaud. The Milhaud work is adapted from music the composer wrote for a French film released in 1939; it is composed of short vignettes depicting scenes from the French Middle Ages.

The quintet is composed of prominent wind players from around the Mother Lode, all veteran players in Friends of Music concerts: Janet Telford, flute, from Soulbysville, oboist Jane Buzzard of Sonora, clarinetist Hank King of Pioneer, French hornist Bill Minkel of Camp Connell and bassoonist Gail Buzzard of Sonora.

The second half of the program presents the Trio for violin, cello and piano of Irish-English composer Ernest Moeran. It makes a rare foray into the special realm of English-Irish music, with echoes of ancient Celtic folk music and haunting melodies. It is performed by violinist Gil Carroll and cellist Russ Bartoli, both frequent visitors from the Bay Area in Friends of Music chamber concerts, joining pianist and Friends of Music President Ron Brickman.
