Common Ground Senior Services brings on the Luau in Angels Camp ~By Patrick Works
October 15, 2011, Utica Park, Angels Camp, CA...Common Ground Senior Services provides much the the older members of our community. One of the most important is their running our local Meals on Wheels program, bringing meals and companionship to housebound seniors throughout Calaveras and Amador Counties. These meals are provided to any home bound person in our community who is 60 years or older. While costing nearly $6.50 per meal, seniors only pay $3.00...if they can. Nobody who asks for a meal is turned down. Even when they are all paid for, Common Ground Senior Services has to cover half the cost of the meals, as well as the costs of preparation and delivery..

Saturday Common Ground held a community event to help defray some of these costs. Pit-roasted pig, the sound of drums...yes indeed they threw a luau at Utica Park in downtown Angels Camp!
The feast was on, and the entertainment began as seniors, community supporters, and staff of Common Ground Senior Services were joined by many lucky local residents with a taste for Luau food, a love of color, and an ear for authentic Polynesian dancing.
Na Hoku Mai Kanoelani brought something almost nobody in Calaveras County gets to see: authentic Hula. This was not just the usual tourist show, but as one of the dancers described it to me "The Ancient".
Color, rhythm, history, and a whole lot of fun; Na Hoku Mai Kanoelani had it all!
