COLD AND FLU PREVENTION ~ By Dr. Andrea Sullivan, Inner Balance Sports Chiropractic

Murphys, CA...Colds and flus are on everyone’s minds right now with this sudden onset of cold weather. Many people are wondering if their favorite home remedies are really effective. Everyone has ideas about vitamins, minerals and supplements- do they really work? According to some health practitioners, the answer is no. There is no magic to staying healthy, we just need to use common sense. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, get plenty of rest and exercise, and stay away from refined sugars (what!!). We are learning that some supplements can be very effective...

We need a combination of antioxidants (there are hundreds in all) similar to what we would get if we ate a diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants work best in combination with one another, possibly enhancing each other’s actions. Occasionally we see studies that show antioxidants aren’t helpful. Most of those studies look at one or just a few of these nutrients. On their own, individual antioxidants do not have the same effect. This is not typical to a healthy diet. Cod liver oil and fish oil have a few antioxidants in them and other important health benefits, but not necessarily for strengthening the immune system.
So, how do we know if we are taking adequate measures? There is a new technology that measures your antioxidant status in 90 seconds. It is like getting your nutritional report card. It also gives you risk factors for macular degeneration, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Many of you might have seen this Biophotonic Scanner on Dr. Oz’s show: “Cancer Fighting Antioxidants”. The Scanner was developed with 2 NIH grants at the University of Utah, and is based on Nobel prize winning science. If you are wondering if the supplements you are taking are getting the job done (there is nothing more expensive than an inexpensive product that doesn’t work), call and schedule a time to take this painless, inexpensive test. You can be tested at Family 4 Fitness (736-0039) or at Inner Balance Sports Chiropractic in Murphys (727-4775).
