July 9th trail building and BBQ

July 9th is our next trail building day, but with a twist. As usual, we will meet at 8:30 a.m. but this time we shall meet at the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum at White Pines. After a brief safety orientation by Jeffery Hilson of the USFS, we will go to the section of trail we will be working on for the morning. Since it gets warm as the morning progresses, please bring layers, gloves, hat, sunscreen, and water. If you have a favorite garden tool like loppers, bring those, but we will have tools for everyone. Folks from eight to eighty-eight are invited; children should have adult supervision.

At noon, we will have a BBQ with hot dogs and the fixin's at the Logging Museum, for a small requested donation. You are invited to join the BBQ whether or not you participated in the earlier trail building activity. At the BBQ, the Arnold Rim Trail Association will share last year's successes on the trail and give an overview of what is on tap for the Summer and Fall of 2011. Haven't been to the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum? Here are the directions. A hearty thanks to Sierra Nevada Logging Museum and Ginny Kafka for making the facility available to us.

July 23rd NATRC event
NATRC is a competitive trail ride where the riders have a set number of miles and a set amount of time to do them in. (It is not a race.) The whole ride lasts about 8 hrs including lunch and pulse and respiration checks. Everyone shows up on Friday, July 22nd, to check in and get trail briefing. The actual ride starts Saturday morning, July 23rd, at 6:30 am and finishes around 2:30 pm. There are 2 judges, one for the horse and his conditioning and one for the rider and how he or she rides.

This is where Arnold Rim Trail Association volunteers come in. The ride manager Robyn Berwick needs two volunteers to help with crossing Avery Sheep Ranch Road in the morning, from 6:30 am to 8:30 am. Robyn also needs four bicyclists to be “point riders”. They will need to be experienced bicyclists who will ride out in front of the horses to make sure all the ride markers were still in place. They will leave about 6 am. These cyclists will participate for the entire event and each will cover about thirty miles. For those who are comfortable being around horses, Robyn needs four volunteers to be on the pulse and respiration crews. This commitment will include the morning and early afternoon. Robyn will meet with all the volunteers at 5:30 pm on Friday, July 22nd, at the main parking area on Valley View Drive. Following the orientation, she will have dinner for the volunteers. She will also have lunch for them at the Saturday event. Any money that NATRC has after expenses will be donated to the Arnold Rim Trail Association.

Please call or email Robyn by Wednesday, July 13th, about this wonderful opportunity for us to volunteer. Last year’s event, also conducted on the Arnold Rim Trail, was a success and we want for this year’s to build on that momentum. In some places, multi-use trails with hikers, cyclists, and equestrians have led to tension. We have seen the opposite here on the Arnold Rim Trail; the bonds between these groups are getting stronger. Please volunteer for this fabulous equestrian event to continue to forge these strong bonds of cooperation.
