In Loving Memory of Edward Mateo, 1922~2011

Murphys, CA....Eddward Mateo, 89, passed away in Murphys, California on Monday, April 25th. He was born to the late Joseph and Carmen Mateo, February 19, 1922, at their home in San Leandro, California. As a youth, Ed performed as a Flamenco dancer at various Spanish clubs throughout the Bay Area and along the coast with his sister and other family members. .....

Ed graduated from Hayward High in 1940 and worked in a shipyard, as well as for several large fencing contractors. He was a proud member of both the Laborers and Ironworkers unions. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a flight mechanic.

Ed married the late Marge Humble and they had four children and lived in Hayward. In 1969, he married Greta (Dillon) Lawrence and helped to raise her three children, as well.

Ed was a boxing coach at the San Leandro Boys Club for many years, and was committed to the youth of his community. He was also an avid gardener, an affinity he inherited from his father. Ed was a story teller, and entertained family with various imitations and voices.

Ed and Greta retired to Murphys in 2005, and moved into their dream cottage in 2006.

Ed is survived by his wife, Greta Mateo, his children, Dennis Mateo, Marie Goodwin, Edward Mateo and Gregory Mateo. He is also survived by his step-children: Ronald Lawrence, Judith Lawrence and Joel Lawrence, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, as well as his siblings, Rose Galvan and Joseph Mateo and numerous nieces and nephews, to whom he was always loving and supportive.

Ed was predeceased by his brother, Frank Mateo.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Veterans Society or Humane Society.

Services will be held at Murphys Faith Lutheran Church on Friday, April 29 at 2 pm.
