Angels Camp, CA....Bret Harte Theater was the venue over the weekend for 3 performance of "Sleeping Beauty Kids" presented by CSTARS Kids, the local not-for-profit organization dedicated to performance arts education and opportunities for kids here in Calaveras County. The theater was full and the backstage dressing rooms a beehive of activity. There were more conical hats than this reporter had ever seen as the performance got under way at 2PM.....

From 5-18 years of age, there was a full range of parts for all the kids; from background roles for the younger cast members, all the way to fantastic performances in the lead parts with some incredible singing and dancing.
This was a performance of the Disney version of the perennial fairy tale story of Sleeping Beauty, which meant there were lots and lots of songs and cute costumes. Villains and heroes were all well represented, not to mention an amazing 15 foot tall dragon that blew smoke and breathed fire.
Thankfully our hero prince Phillip was able to avail himself of the magical intervention offered by the Good Fairies Flora, Fauna, and Merriwether. We are happy to report he successfully slew the dragon, rescued Princess Aurora, and thwarted the evil designs of the Bad Fairy Maleficent.
Latest reports just at press time indicate Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora will be living happily ever after.
This being the last performance of the current production, there were tears and hugs aplenty as the cast assembled after the performance and the director, Kathy Mazzaferro thanked all the families and friends of CSTARS Kids who made the production possible. One of the cast members, now turning 18, was given a special send off by Ms. Mazzaferro and her fellow cast members, as she goes on to other theatrical endeavors.
