Wines of the World Changes to Thursdays in 2011

WINES OF THE WORLD – Thursday, January 13 – Barberas of the Sierra with Matt Hatcher....No need to burn barrels of fossil fuel traveling the globe when learning about and sampling wines from around the world. It’s as easy at turning into Murphys Historic Hotel’s parking lot and taking a few steps up to the Ballroom, where you’ll be greeted by friendly faces from the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance.....

A Special Thank You to The Wine Grape Alliance for Being a Monthly Advertiser!

“Wines of the World is not just a wine tasting,” exclaimed Carrie Nelson, CWA Administrator. “Here you’re learning all about the wines and the winemaking process, and can choose your favorite pick from six to eight wines offered that evening. This program is an integral part of CWA’s educational program.” And, better yet, it is open to the public with no reservations needed.

In 2011 Wines of the World (WOTW for those texters) changes from the second Wednesday to the second Thursday of every month. Matt Hatcher of Hatcher Winery will present Barberas from the Sierra Foothills Thursday, Jan. 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Murphys Historic Hotel, 457 Main St., smack dab in Murphy’s iconic tree-lined historic district. A bevy of the area’s finest Barberas will be poured alongside light appetizers from the Murphys Hotel. Cost is $15 for CWA members and $25 for non-members, so no worries about breaking the bank account. To top it off, the hotel offers a $5 discount coupon for each entrée for participants who opt to stay for dinner.

According to Hatcher, “The reputation of the Sierra Foothill Barbera is growing quickly, and guests at the event will find out what others have discovered – that Sierra Foothill Barberas are truly among our finest red wines.”

Barbera is a red Italian wine grape variety that, as of 2000, was the third most-planted red grape variety in Italy. It produces good yields and is known for its deep color, low tannins and robust fruit flavors of cherry, red and blackberry. Outside of Italy, Barbera is rarely found in Europe except for small plantings in Greece, Romania, and Slovenia. However, in California, Barbera is one of the most successful of the Piemontese (the area in Italy most Barbera grows) grapes to be adapted in the state with more than 8,000 acres of plantings. And in Calaveras, it’s definitely gaining ground, literally.

See you there!
