Passion for Animals Drives Bret Hart Student’s Senior Project~By Bob Seiler
It’s a 37 degree December Saturday morning in Arnold and Andrea Peffer is trying to keep her hands warm. She’s there for a purpose – to help animals – by offering home-made baked goods for sale at her table in front of the Calaveras Humane Society Thrift Store. Andrea, a senior at Bret Harte High School, is putting extra effort into her senior project. She wants to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and selected a senior project that ties in with her passion. Andrea talked with Cathy Gaitlin, DVM and co-owner of Arnold Pet Clinic, who agreed to have her do an internship there 20 hours per month, as .....
well as incorporate some community service. So Andrea decided to gather up her mother’s and grandmother’s recipes and hold a bake sale with the proceeds benefitting the Calaveras Humane Society, under the business mentorship of Jenni Roland, the CHS Thrift Store Manager. Diligently persevering in the cold, she raised $255 for CHS selling a variety of goodies, including her original Jellybean White Fudge. She made everything herself – well almost. “I have to confess my mom helped me with a few things”, she said. And that’s just the first of four bake sales she’ll have between now and Spring. “I hope to raise more than $1,000 to help the efforts of the Calaveras Humane Society to shelter, spay, neuter and foster animals in the county”, said Andrea.
And that’s just part of her senior project. Through her internship as a vet assistant at the Arnold Pet Clinic, she is helping Dr. Gaitlin with animal evaluations, helping restrain those nervous or excited pooches and felines and learning how to administer medications. She also assists in hospital care and is learning the ins and outs of office management, even tackling the veterinary office software system. “Andrea is a great asset to our office” says Dr. Gaitlin. “While her project commits her to 20 hours per month, she comes in much more – on Saturdays, after school and on school holidays and minimum days. She puts forth lots more effort than required because she loves the animals so much.”
In addition to her internship, Andrea still finds time to be very active in FFA at Bret Harte, through which she raises and sells chickens at the County Fair. She also cares for her rabbits and chickens at home.
Andrea plans to attend Columbia College after graduation in June, then transfer to U.C. Davis to eventually get a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine. She is the daughter of Doug and Stephanie Peffer of Dorrington and has two brothers in active military service – Robert in the Navy and Keith, who is a Marine currently serving in Afghanistan (“I’m so proud of them both”, she says.)
Rain, snow, wind or cold, you’ll find Andrea in front of the Thrift Store again the Saturday before Christmas and again on the Saturday before Valentine’s Day. And knowing Andrea, she’ll probably be there more than required, because that’s what she does – all for her love of the animals.
