Wine Down Fridays, Tastings of Calaveras County Wines at Sierra Rep!

Sonora, CA...Sierra Repertory Theatre presents the Second Annual Wine Down Fridays for the perfect combination of fine wine and live theatre. Eight Calaveras County wineries will host a small tasting of their wines—a white and a red--every Friday night at 6 PM during the run of The Marvelous Wonderettes, June 25-August 15 at the East Sonora Theatre. “We’re always looking for new ways to enhance our patrons’ experience while they’re at the theatre,” says Company Manager and Wine Down Fridays coordinator Lisette Sweetland. “Offering a pre-show wine tasting was a natural combination.”...

Adding a little extra fun to Friday nights also works well with the festive atmosphere of The Marvelous Wonderettes, which opens at senior prom, then at their ten-year reunion after intermission.

“The show is the perfect summertime escape,” says Director/Choreographer Scott Viets. “Light, bubbly, refreshing – enjoy a glass of fine Calaveras wine and you have the ingredients for a great night out!”

With the success of last year’s Wine Down Fridays, participating wineries were eager to come back. They include Lavender Ridge Vineyards, Chiarella Wines, Zucca Mountain Vineyards, Hatcher Winery, Twisted Oak Winery, Newsome-Harlow Wines and new this year Prospect 772 Wines and Tanner Vineyards.

“I’m excited to have Tanner Vineyards and Prospect 772 on board this year,” says Sweetland. “Prospect 772 is a small 25 acre vineyard outside of Angels Camp. Their wines can only be found in a handful of restaurants from Sonoma to just one restaurant in Sonora. Having them at Sierra Rep is a unique privilege for our patrons.”

Each winery will present a red and a white or a rose (depending on the line-up) for a small tasting after which patrons will choose which glass of wine they would like. The price per glass is $7.

“Patrons not only get a great glass of wine, but the added bonus of the tasting,” says Sweetland. “Consider it more Bordeaux for your buck.”

In most cases, the vintners will be available to answer questions about their wines and otherwise mingle with guests.

Patrons won’t be able to buy bottles at the theatre that night, but are invited to cross the pond and visit the tasting rooms.

“Wine making is an art and every opportunity you have to find out more, you should take it,” says Sweetland.

Also in conjunction with The Marvelous Wonderettes is Sierra Rep’s 18th Annual Silent Art Auction. Artwork will be on display in the East Sonora lobby June 25 through August 8. Bid in person or by calling East Sonora Theatre’s direct line (209) 532-3133.

About Sierra Repertory Theatre
SRT is a professional non-profit theater producing a year-round season of classic and contemporary plays at two locations — the SRT theater in East Sonora and the historic Fallon House Theatre in Columbia. The talented resident company and visiting guest artists include members of Actors' Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers. High quality performances, production values and management have established Sierra Rep as a model for regional theater. Sierra Rep's 200-seat theater in East Sonora is intimate, attractive and comfortable; with excellent sight lines and acoustics, and no seat more than 10 rows from the stage. The Fallon House is a restored Gold Rush-era theater and inn located in Columbia State Historic Park. It seats 274. Both theaters are centrally heated and cooled and wheelchair accessible. The East Sonora Theater has an assistive listening system for hearing-impaired patrons.
