Murphys Business Association Gets Ready for Christmas

Murphys, CA...On Wednesday afternoon members of the Murphys Business Association were out in force trimming a gorgeous tree from Kautz Vineyards that is the official Murphys Christmas Tree for 2009. The stately tree resides at the corner of Main and Jones and will officially be unveiled during the Murphys Open House tonight. The MBA has done a wonderful job over the years helping Murphys and Calaveras County become one of the up and coming tourist draws in the state...

Not only is tourism a draw for the businesses and wineries in the area it is also one of the driving forces for economic development in the region. Just last week we were looking at some labor statistics that showed that Calaveras County ranks close to the top counties in the state for the percentage of jobs from tourism. According to Dean Runyan and Associates over 12% of the jobs in Calaveras County are Tourism related. Many we have spoken with feel this number is actually under the real totals.

Oops...getting back to the Murphys Christmas Tree. Make sure you stop by and take a gander at it during the Murphys Open House...

A festive Holiday Open House featuring strolling carolers, a children’s parade, the lighting of the community Christmas tree, complementary food and beverages, and the entry into town by Santa and Mrs. Claus will be presented by the Murphys Business Association on Friday, December 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. “We feel this is a way for the merchants and other Murphy businesses to give a yuletide gift to the community and to say thanks to locals and visitors alike for their support throughout the year,” states Michelle Plotnik, MBA president. Main St. will be closed from Sheep Ranch Rd. to Big Trees Rd. to allow ....

people to stroll from store to store, carolers and other performers to entertain the crowd, and the popular children’s parade to take place. The parade, led by Santa and Mrs. Claus will begin at 6:00 p.m. It will wind its ways down Main St. from the historic Murphys Hotel to Big Trees Rd. where it will make a u-turn and finish at the Native Sons Hall.

Anyone wishing to be in the parade should contact Charlie Anderson, owner of the Murphys Village Toy Store, 728-8517.

During the parade, Santa and Mrs. Clause will light the community tree in The Arbors patio and then proceed to the Native Sons Hall where they will greet the youngsters.

Anyone wishing to volunteer to be a caroler, musician, or other entertainer should contact Gloria Zweers at 728-3991. Volunteers who would like to be part of this festive occasion by helping with decorating and road closure may call Michelle Plotnik at 728-8471 or visit the MBA website, info@visitmurphys.com.

There is no admission charge for the Murphys Holiday Open House. Most Main St. businesses will be open and many will be offering complementary snacks and beverages. Free parking is available at the Black Bart Playhouse, Masonic Hall, and behind the Arbors.
