Calaveras County Storm Blizzard Preparedness

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras County is gearing up for an approaching storm with snow expected to hit as low as 1,000 feet in elevation. The Office of Emergency Services (OES) encourages residents to take simple steps to stay safe and warm.

• Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and updates. Stay informed about any advisories or warnings in your area.
• Prepare Emergency Kit: Assemble an emergency kit with essentials such as non-perishable food, water, medications, blankets, flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit.
• Dress in Layers: Layer your clothing to trap body heat. Wear a waterproof outer layer to protect against snow and wind.
• Limit Outdoor Exposure: Minimize time spent outdoors during extreme cold or blizzard conditions. If you need to go out, dress warmly and cover exposed skin.
• Snow Removal Safety: Shovel snow in manageable amounts to prevent overexertion. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and avoid pushing your physical limits.
• Indoor Shelter: Bring pets indoors during winter storms. If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for them.
• Warm Bedding: Provide a warm and comfortable sleeping area with extra bedding for your pets to stay cozy.
• Emergency Kit for Pets: Include pet-specific items in your emergency kit, such as food, medications, and copies of medical records.
• Limit Outdoor Time: Minimize outdoor exposure for pets, especially during extreme cold or blizzard conditions. Keep walks short.
• Avoid Unnecessary Driving: If it's not necessary, avoid driving during the storm. Slippery roads and reduced visibility can make travel hazardous.
• Check on Neighbors: Extend a helping hand to neighbors, especially those who may need assistance during severe weather. A friendly check-in can make a big difference.
