Letter to the Editor: Meadowmont EV Charging Station ~ Sarah Jones

Arnold, CA...As a homeowner in Arnold, I’m deeply concerned about the placement of Meadowmont Shopping Center’s new electric vehicle charging station behind the complex, in the woods, adjacent to residences.

To be clear, I fully support bringing electric vehicle charging station infrastructure to Calaveras county, and I recognize that the state is accelerating progress with financial incentives and the county is following along with streamlined permitting requirements.

But, it's the job of the local government to address and support the concerns of the community, and we've been given no opportunity to comment on the issues posed by fast-tracking permit approval of the building owners’ choice to locate the project behind the store as opposed to the property’s safe, expansive, highway-adjacent main parking lot.

This location introduces numerous safety and quality-of-life issues, from the extreme fire risk posed by EVs to the light pollution, noise pollution, and the safety issues (for both visitors and residents) introduced by allowing 24-hour access to an obscured location without regard to security features or noise and light mitigation.

I’ve reached out twice to the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors seeking transparency in this process and a path to productive dialogue, and I’m still waiting for a response.

As misinformation spreads and miscommunication clouds this issue, county residents deserve better communication and more support from their elected officials.

      A dotard can't handle change.
Changes toward electric vehicles won't change the diehard that believes gasoline engines will never be replaced.
While I believe that gasoline engines will not be replaced in my life time, I do think our future lies in electric vehicles, and alternative powered vehicles.

Electric vehicles, just imagine the billions of tons of earth needed to be dug, scraped, tunneled thru for just the batteries for hundreds of millions of cars, so that will be Billions and billions of batteries that also will be a hazardous waste. Guess what? EV is not the answer, simpleton. You're just another easily manipulated liberal dumbacrap unable to think for themself.

EMF - Not to mention the health risks associated with scientifically measurable Electro Magnetic Frequencies that radiate from EV stations into neighboring homes, restaurants, businesses.

        Sarah.....
It is the job of government to address your concerns.
However, it's not their job to support your concerns.
        Forget the supervisors.
If you really want to understand if this is legal, ask the planning and building departments to explain how this meets our current regulations. I'd bet money it does, if it's been permitted.
For any given project there can be any number of legally compliant solutions.
This solution obviously doesn't meet your concerns and criteria but that doesn't mean anything dubious is occurring here.
        Welcome to Calaveras County. :)

FYI, “Dean and Joe” are out of San Francisco and want to own Arnold!! Eliminating round table pizza and escalating rent in Meadowmont center. More crooked than a snake. Locals need to be concerned like, big time. Nothing but lies out of them. Won’t find me in that center. Hope they lose all their money doing what they are! Yes, the charging stations are behind the market for a reason. Figure it out, very simple indeed!

VERY VALID CONCERN
Posted on: 2023-08-14 11:36:42   By: Anonymous

This is a very valid concern. These EV batteries are nearly impossible to put out and we have no idea if our local fire department or Cal Fire would be able to put one out. The town of Arnold is very vulnerable to burning up if a fire started from an EV battery.

There are plenty of republicans that are buying EV - not only democrats - and by the way, the placement of charging stations has nothing to do with political parties. It IS about placement of charging stations!

Given that every 1/3 car on the road during the weekend is a Tesla, your POV doesn't seem to be correlated with the evidence we have to date. You're not wrong, but a tank of gasoline is pretty damn dangerous too.

The new owner of the shopping center seems a bit shady. Especially after what they did to the owners of Round Table. Horrible spot for electric vehicle charging. I’m sure the delivery trucks will appreciate the line of vehicles waiting to get a charge. But at least these Bay Area people can go for a nice swim in the pond or ice skate in the winter while they wait to charge their Tesla
