Latest News From GABA!
Arnold, CA....Here is the latest news from GABA, The Greater Arnold Business Association....GABA will hold their July Mixer on Thursday, July 17th from 5:30~7pm at White Pines Lake in Lions Grove. Come on out and spend some time at our beautiful lake, now more enjoyable than ever due to the hard work of the White Pines Park Committee. Hosted in July by Bruce Tallakson~Tax Services and White Glove Cleaning Service. They will provide food and GABA will do beverages. And, of course, there will be a raffle as well....
INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE
The parade is scheduled for Saturday, July 5th beginning at 10AM. Highway 4 will be closed at 9:30 AM. The Parade Route will begin at the lower end of the Arnold Byway just east of town and end at Cedar Center. Entry Forms are still available at Mountain Media and Foothill Printing in the Big Trees Shopping Center as well as Pacific State Bank next to the Arnold Post Office and the Avery and Hathaway Pines Post Offices. If you have participated in the past, you will have received an entry form in the mail. The deadline to enter was June 20th. Last minute entries may be approved by calling Bunny Firebaugh at 795-4305 or Tami Rakstad at 795-3530. There are categories for floats, autos, musical, marching and equestrians. Betty Ann Prescott is our Grand Marshal.

The purpose of the Arnold Independence Day Parade is to celebrate the history of America and Arnold, but most of all to remember the past. Without Remembering the Past (this year’s theme), how can we anticipate the future? The reason Betty Ann Prescott was chosen as Grand Marshal for this year’s Arnold Independence day parade was because she encompasses the past, is thriving in the NOW and looking forward to the future.
If you haven’t heard of Betty Ann, you really need to get out more. At the young age of 86 she is currently involved in AAUW (Co-President of the Calaveras Chapter), PC user group & Genealogy subgroup, Unitarian Fellowship in Sonora, Friends of the Library (Life member), Bear Valley Ski Club (past President & Treasurer), treasurer of the East Calaveras County Democrats and is on the Board of the Calaveras Big Trees Association. In addition to all of this she finds time to take classes at Klines - 3 times a week, to participate in a writer’s group twice a month and to attend the AAUW book club once a month.
The more I learned about Betty Ann the more I was intrigued. Here is a woman whose life was shaped by her experiences of being a teenager at the beginning of World War II. The first experience led Betty Ann to teach Mechanical Engineering Technology for twenty years at San Joaquin Delta College, thereby allowing a multitude of students to grow from her knowledge. This was expressed in a Certificate of Appreciation from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory upon Betty Ann’s retirement from teaching in 1983. It expressed the following: May your retirement be as meaningful as your influence on us is. – this was signed by 15 students who graduated between the years of 1963 and 1981.
The other experience was the love of flying. Due to the timing and living on the west coast (which had a blackout to private pilots), Betty Ann could not learn to fly. Yet Betty Ann did find a way; she learned to downhill ski. She still enjoys this skill today, with all the enthusiasm and pleasure as when she first started in 1945. In fact she is looking forward to having her 4 year-old great grandson on skis this year up at Bear Valley.
Betty Ann continues to look to the future by learning more about computers and genealogy. She wants to find more time to spend on genealogy, a love which has taken her to England three times since she has retired, even taking a DNA test to learn more. Betty Ann’s advice is to “Keep learning, travel, stay active and be social.” Great advice from a great woman!
This year the Arnold Independence Day Parade: Remembering the Past is on Saturday, July 5th at 10:00AM in Arnold from the Arnold Byway to Cedar Center.

GABA GUIDES
The new guides are out and one of the most popular things on the racks! They are also being distributed at Travel shows and the State Fair. As a member, you are entitled to 50 free guides. If you need more, they are available at cost for 35 cents each. They are available at Foothill Printing for pick up as well. If you haven’t got some yet, be sure to go by there and get yours! They are a great marketing tool.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
GABA is pleased to welcome new member, Welsh Products, Inc., to the Association. The international mail order business opened their doors in 1979, working out of Vallejo and Benicia , California until April 2007. At that time, Kent Welsh, the son of the original owners and his business partner, local resident Erin Ross, took over the management of the company and moved headquarters to the Greater Arnold Area. Erin was born and raised in Calaveras County and at one time co-owned Bistro Espresso with Vina Moda owners Jonathon Phillips and Jeannine Hebel. Erin is also a member and lead singer of the renowned local band, Schiraz. If you’ve never heard them play, be sure to try and catch them some time. They play a mix of jazz and blues and they are a treasured local talent.
