Volunteer Firefighter Academy ~By Hanna Heath
Angels Camp, CA….This afternoon the Annual Volunteer Firefighter Academy held training at Angels Camp Fire Department Station 2. The training agenda included hose evolutions, hose lays, portable water sources, pumps and large diameter hose. Bill Fullerton, coordinator of the fire academy stated, “The academy gives volunteer firefighters the basic firefighter training and techniques.” ……..
Twenty three academy students participated in today’s training. All students are volunteer firefighters from various departments throughout the county. Departments included in the academy include: Murphys Fire, West Point Fire, Jenny Lind Fire, San Andreas Fire and Central Fire and Rescue. The training instructors were local firefighters who volunteered their time to teach fellow firefighters the basic training techniques, safety and skills.
The academy started in mid March and will continue through the end of May. Throughout the academy students will participate in 180 hours of various firefighting drills, including: wildland fire, auto extrication, and a live fire burn. After completing the academy students will receive an academy certification, confined space training, hazmat training and most of the training for their firefighter 1 certificate.
“This academy also allows all of the agencies to work together and practice their skills so that they are prepared for emergency situations,” shared Bill.
