Smoke in Arnold Area from Prescribed Burn at Big Trees State Park

Arnold, CA...California State Parks, in cooperation with CAL FIRE, is conducting a prescribed burn and work is underway. The planned fire treatment will cover up to 157 acres and will include areas along the Walter W. Smith Parkway and the park’s eastern boundary near the lower edge of Big Trees Village. Active ignition will take 3 to 5 days and day and evening ignition may occur.

📣 ATTENTION CAMPERS
The Oak Hollow Campground may be heavily impacted by smoke, especially overnight. The North Grove Campground may experience some smoke.

📣 ATTENTION HIKERS
Smoke may be thicker in the morning and evening hours. River Canyon Trail and Lava Bluff Trail may be very smoky. Smoke may impact additional trails.

📣 ATTENTION ALL
Some fire roads will be closed. One-way traffic control will occur on the main road through the park.

Prescribed burning is one of the tools used by the department for vegetation management to increase the resilience of the forest. Forest management and prescribed fires help restore and maintain a complex forest community, reduce hazardous fuel loads, improve wildlife habitat, restore nutrients to the soil, protect park infrastructure, and reduce the chance of a catastrophic wildfire.
