Calaveras County Announces the Opening of Cooling Centers due to Excessive Heat Warning

San Andreas, CA...The U.S. National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Calaveras County. The warning remains in effect from 11 AM Tuesday, July 2nd through 8 PM Sunday, July 7th. During this time, temperatures are expected to exceed 105 degrees with limited overnight relief.

Older adults, young children, people with chronic conditions, and people who are ill or on certain medications are at highest risk. High temperatures caused over 2,300 heat related deaths in the United States in 2023. Staying safe during extreme heat can prevent heat-related illnesses or even death.

“As temperatures rise, be aware of the warning signs of heat-related illness,” stated Calaveras County Health Officer Dr. Rene Ramirez. “Be on the lookout for key signs like heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, nausea or vomiting, or dizziness.”

Preventable heat-related illnesses include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and cramps. These illnesses can lead to serious complications, including death. To escape the heat and prevent heat-related illness, staying in an air-conditioned space is ideal. If your home does not have air conditioning, visit public places like libraries, coffee shops, or grocery stores already open to the public that provide temporary relief from the heat.

Calaveras County residents will have access to cooling centers to escape the dangerous heat. These centers will offer a cool and comfortable place for anyone seeking relief. For those who need a ride, Calaveras Connect offers free transportation assistance to cooling centers. Call (209) 754-4450 by 3:00 PM the day before you wish to travel to reserve your seat for Dial-a-Ride. Cooling Centers will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 8 PM at the following locations:
