Sacramento, CA...On the 5th anniversary of the state’s apology to California Native American peoples, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the state’s support for the return of over 2,800 acres of ancestral land to the Shasta Indian Nation. This return is one of the largest in state history and part of the state’s ongoing efforts to right the historical wrongs committed against the Native communities of California.

Copperopolis, CA...Update: The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office in coordination with Calaveras OES is continuing to monitor the wildfire in Copperopolis. Here are the latest updates: Fire Status: The wildfire has reached roughly 1,500 acres. 5,000 residents are without power. Road Closures: Highway 4 at Little John Road (Highway 4 at Obyrnes Ferry) is closed. Pool Station Road at Highway 4 remains closed. Hunt Road at Milton Road, Salt Springs Valley Road, Felix Road, and Rock Creek Road are also closed. Evacuation Order: The areas of Copper Town Square and Obyrnes Ferry Road to the county line are under an evacuation order. All residents are ordered to immediately evacuate.

Sacramento, CA...A new draft regulation announced by California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara will require that insurers that use new catastrophe modeling must write more policies in distressed areas, with larger insurance companies required to insure properties in distressed areas at a rate equal to 85% of the insurer’s statewide market share. This is part of the Commissioner’s Sustainable Insurance Strategy, a package of reforms to strengthen California’s marketplace and maintain strong consumer protections.
Stanislaus National Forest Extends Seasonal Road Closures Through June 30.

Sonora, CA...After a late snow year and lingering damage to Stanislaus National Forest roads, Acting Forest Supervisor Beth Martinez has issued a forest order extending the seasonal road closures for affected roads in the Mi-Wok/Summit and Calaveras Ranger Districts, effective June 11 through June 30. “After another winter of heavy snow, especially later in the season, we want to ensure that our roads are in the best possible condition before they see the heavy traffic of summer recreation,” said Martinez.
