CAL FIRE Conducts Night Training Flights to Enhance Aerial Firefighting Capabilities
McClellan, CA - CAL FIRE will be honing its nighttime firefighting capabilities through night vision goggle training exercises. Residents in the vicinity of Folsom Lake and surrounding neighborhoods can expect to see three to four helicopters operating from dusk until midnight.
These flights are crucial for ensuring CAL FIRE crews are prepared and proficient, especially during critical nighttime hours when visibility is reduced. During the training, pilots will practice various maneuvers, including water drops. Crews will practice vital skills such as navigation and communication.
What to Expect:
• Residents may see and hear low-flying CAL FIRE helicopters during the training period.
• The aircraft will be operating with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval and will adhere to all safety regulations.
• While the noise level may increase slightly, CAL FIRE is committed to minimizing disruption to the community.
Why Night Training Matters:
• Wildfires can occur any time of the day and CAL FIRE crews need to be prepared to respond effectively regardless of lighting conditions.
• Night training allows pilots and crews to hone their skills in situations that closely resemble real-world fire emergencies.
• By conducting regular training exercises, CAL FIRE ensures the safety of both its firefighters and the communities they serve.
CAL FIRE appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the community as they conduct this important training exercise.
