The Silent Takeover of Our Land, Star Thistle, Goat Grasses and Medusahead~By Sheldon Bissell and Terry McBride

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/02/2007 08:33 PM
July 16th through July 22th has been designated "Weed Awareness Week." The Calaveras County Department of Agriculture is offering education to let people know just what kinds of weeds are growing right in their own backyards.... These weeds are considered noxious as they displace desirable vegetation and wildlife and lower the capability of pasture land to feed livestock. These weeds can and do cause injury and death to livestock. They will take beautiful and productive pasture land and in a few short years render it worthless to....

Old Oaks Are Full of Life~By Ken Churches

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/29/2007 12:32 PM
It is so very important to protect that majestic old oak on your foothill property. It is home to an entire ecosystem of life in its limbs. First, consider how long the tree has stood. A white oak in the foothills that is two feet in diameter may be 200 years old; a three-foot diameter tree is closer to three hundred years old. In that time, a complex community has developed amid the heavy spreading limbs....

Birds in Our Oak Woodlands~By Ken Churches, County Farm Advisor

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 06/25/2007 12:55 PM
Oak fanciers have long understood the importance of acorns as food for wildlife. But a closer look at the habits of some birds, particularly jays, shows that they do far more than harvest the acorn crop. An industrious group of jays can mount an acorn airlift that is nothing short of incredible, moving a forest worth of trees every autumn. Often the acorns are planted in the ideal spot for...
