O.A.R.S. Guides Lead Historic Rafting Descent On the Colorado River “Pulse Flow”

Posted by: Andy_Johnson on 04/07/2014 08:34 AM
ANGELS CAMP, CA ... A binational group of conservationists from the United States and Mexico, along with several O.A.R.S. river guides, joined together last week for a historic 22-mile rafting trip on the newly revived Colorado River at the U.S.-Mexico border. This “first descent” of sorts (by oar raft) was made possible by the recent Colorado River “pulse flow” experiment which has allowed approximately 100,000-acre-feet of water (less than 1 percent of the annual flow of the Colorado River) to flow south toward the Sea of Cortez for one of the first times in nearly 50 years. The effort to reconnect the river to the sea, an effort led by a coalition of environmental groups collectively known as Raise the River and made possible by the historic Minute 319 agreement between the U.S. and Mexico, was to recreate a mini spring flood in the river and delta region and restore the degraded and endangered Colorado River delta in Mexico. The "pulse" began on Sunday, March 23, 2014 when the gates of the Morelos Dam on the U.S.-Mexico border were lifted, allowing water that had typically been redirected for upstream water needs to once again flow into the final stretch of the Colorado River...

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/06/2014 08:25 PM
In our first true cold weather meet of the year, the Bret Harte swimmers were still able to swim well and defeat both Amador and Argonaut teams. By mid meet the scores got very close and the Bret Harte Team Captains had to huddle their team together and fire up the swimmers to finish strong and go on to win the meet. Standout swims included junior Josh Brady swimming personal bests in all 4 of his events, swimming freesytle in all three relays and the 100 yard freestyle, proving in his rookie year that he is now one of the team's top freestylers. Sophomore Katie Johnson swam the longest freestyle event for the team, the 500 yard freestyle and dropped 18 seconds off her previous time, confirming her spot as one of the top distance freestylers for the Bret Harte girls team. Another first year swimmer and one to watch is freshman Tyler Carlson; as he has moved his way into the position of third ranked butterflier for the boys team, placing and scoring points in the 100 yard butterfly...
