Posted by: thepinetree on 06/06/2021 09:28 PM
Washington, DC...Forty years ago today, five young men in Los Angeles were confirmed as the first known patients stricken with an illness that the world would later come to know as AIDS. In the decades since, more than 700,000 Americans and 32.7 million people worldwide have been lost to AIDS-related illnesses – a heartbreaking human toll that has disproportionately devastated LGBTQ+ communities, communities of color, and underserved and marginalized people around the world.

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/04/2021 09:28 AM
Washington, DC...Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 559,000 in May, and the unemployment rate declined by 0.3 percentage point to 5.8 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Notable job gains occurred in leisure and hospitality, in public and private education, and in health care and social assistance. This news release presents statistics from two monthly surveys. The household survey measures labor force status, including unemployment, by demographic characteristics. The establishment survey measures nonfarm employment, hours, and earnings by industry. For more information about the concepts and statistical methodology used in these two surveys, see the Technical Note.

Why Lifeguards in California Are Making More Than the Governor

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/04/2021 12:14 PM
Los Angeles, CA...In the summer of 1984, I desperately wanted to swim in the deep end of the water with my friends at the local swimming pool. I couldn’t swim very well—I was only five—but that didn’t stop me.  I dove off the diving board into 12 feet of water, and promptly started to flail and flounder. I probably would have sunk right to the bottom if a lifeguard hadn’t jumped in and saved me.

President Biden on the May Jobs Report

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/04/2021 09:16 PM
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware...Hello, folks. Good morning. Today, we received great news for our economy and our recovery and for the American people. This morning, we learned that, in May, our economy created 559,000 new jobs, unemployment rate fell to 5.8 percent, and wages went up for American workers. That means we have now created over 2 million jobs in total since I took office — more jobs than have ever been created in the first four months of any presidency in modern history, triple the rate of my predecessor, eight times the rate of President Reagan.

Governor Newsom on Assault Weapons Court Decision

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/04/2021 10:14 PM
Sacramento, CA...California Governor Gavin Newsom released the following statement on today’s court decision regarding assault weapons: “Today’s decision is a direct threat to public safety and the lives of innocent Californians, period. As the son of a judge, I grew up with deep respect for the judicial process and the importance of a judge’s ability to make impartial fact-based rulings, but the fact that this judge compared the AR-15 – a weapon of war that’s used on the battlefield – to a Swiss Army Knife completely undermines the credibility of this decision and is a slap in the face to the families who’ve lost loved ones to this weapon. We’re not backing down from this fight, and we’ll continue pushing for common sense gun laws that will save lives.”
